Canon Confirms the 5D Mark III’s Light Leaking Phenomenon – Issues a Service Advisory

Quick News – “Leakgate,” the term now being coined by many for the phenomenon affecting numerous early 5D Mark III adopters, has now been officially confirmed by Canon as a legitimate issue, admitting that “in extremely dark environments,” the top LCD panels illumination can directly affect the camera’s metering system.

Although no definitive solution was given for the problem, which has been thoroughly covered by the folks at CameraTown.com, Canon has stated in the official service advisory below that “countermeasures” are currently being examined.

It’s a great sign to see such a prompt response from Canon in regards to the past week’s revelations, let’s hope a solution comes just as quickly. More information to come…

The phenomenon described below has been confirmed when using the Canon EOS 5D Mark III Digital SLR Camera.

Canon is now examining the countermeasures and once the countermeasures are decided, we will post the information on our Web site.

Phenomenon
In extremely dark environments, if the LCD panel illuminates, the displayed exposure value may change as a result of the AE sensor’s detection of light from the LCD panel.
