Photographer and Mother Rachel Hulin Photographs Her Flying Baby

Share

Last summer, photographer Rachel Hulin looked to her bouncing baby boy, Henry, as creative motivation and inspiration for a new photography project. Mommy decided that she wanted baby Henry to fly, and so, baby Henry flew.

In most of Hulin’s photographs, airborne baby Henry can be seen soaring in rooms we believe he has become very acquainted with since his birth: the bedroom, the kitchen, the hallway, the staircase leading up the library, the barn, and the shower. Hulin’s purpose in utilizing these specific rooms is particular. Hulin stated, “I wanted the flights to feel genuine. These are places we are really in everyday, it’s not a cut-and-paste job on random interiors and landscapes.”

In displaying the photographs of her flying baby, Hulin has made it clear that Henry is never thrown, or moved into a place in the frame that he was not primarily in. She continued, “I like Henry to fly the way he feels like it, I never pose him in a specific way. Sometimes he’s graceful and sometimes he’s a little hunchback. I think telling you more would ruin it.”

Hulin’s work with baby Henry is whimsical and dream-like, and the results are nothing short of visually creative. Take a look:
