While it may be fairly easy for many of us to envision and recreate the iconic imagery of the 21st century, few would be able to associate with the photographer behind the still. In an effort to properly and creatively distribute the appropriate notoriety to the men and women responsible for the memorable images, San Diego-based photographer Tim Mantoani has spear-headed an ambitious project with that very goal in mind.
Mantoani’s series entitled “Behind Photographs”, which at its foundation is available as a paperback, depicts the likes of Jeff Widener, Steve McCurry, Bill Eppridge, and Neil Leifer among 150 other famous photographers, holding the captured moments such as Muhammad Ali’s knockdown of Sonny Liston (shown above), or the unforgettable aftermath of the assassination of President Robert F. Kennedy (shown below) in their hands, captured on a 20×24-inch Polaroid portrait.
As mentioned above, Mantoani’s 5-year journey has culminated in a 200 page book, detailing the behind the scenes stories associated with each of the stills, as well as an excerpt from each of the photographers showcased in this project. A small sampling of the series’ images can be found below. Without the use of Google, can you name who each of the photographers are?
