Sony Releases Firmware Update 1.03 for the Alpha A77 and A65

Quick News- Sony of Asia released firmware version 1.03 for their Alpha A77 and A65 SLT cameras today. The Minor improvements include:

  1. Support flash control function for Micro Twin Flash Kit, HVL-MT24AM.
  2. Improved response time of the following operation,
    - Switching the screen mode between the LCD monitor and the electronic viewfinder
    - Front and Rear control dial
    - Fn button control
  3. Other functional improvement.

Leica Finds a Solution to the M9 SD Card Crisis

Quick News: So, you took the leap and purchased the $7,000+ Leica m9, only to find out that it corrupts any SD card that you slip into its magnesium alloy body… bummer! Fortunately Leica has taken note to the issue and revealed plans to rectify the situation:

Thanks to the close collaboration with SD card manufacturers, Leica has now managed to rectify the fault by making adjustments to the firmware. To ensure compatibility with as many cards as possible and to ensure that all the related processes remain fault-free and are not compromised, comprehensive testing must be carried out in the development phase.

In the coming weeks we will test a beta version of the firmware in practice in cooperation with affected and selected customers.

Although no exact date was given, rest assured that a firmware update is in the works and will be released after it has been fully tested.

Major Firmware Update Arrives for the Panasonic LX5

It’s not so much an update as it is a full-fledged upgrade. The Panasonic Lumix LX5 received the royal treatment today and acquired a myriad of new features, taking this already capable camera into the next stratosphere. Here’s what LX5 owners can expect from firmware version II:

  • Auto Focus speed-up.
  • [HIGH ISO NR] has been added to the [REC] menu.
  • Improved auto white balance performance.
  • [ACTIVE MODE] has been added to the [MOTION PICTURE] menu.
  • The AF/AE Lock operated by half-pressing the shutter button has been improved.
  • When [MF] is set, you can make fine adjustments to the focus using a simpler operation than before.
  • The position and size of the AF area you have set are now stored.
  • The upper limit of the shutter speed in Manual Exposure Mode has been raised. (Max 250 seconds approximately
  • [MINIATURE EFFECT] has been added to My Color Mode.
  • [MONITOR] / [VIEWFINDER] has been added to the [SETUP] menu.

Free Firmware Update for the Hasselblad H4D Family of Cameras – New Features Added

Hasselblad announced some exciting news that’s sure to make H4D owners quite happy. A free firmware update (more like upgrade), set to be released December 1st, will bring the following features (already found on the H4D-60) to the H4D-40, H4D-50, H4D-50MS and H4D-200MS medium-format cameras:

  • One click focus check that zooms into 100% and takes advantage of the camera’s updated ability to utilize every pixel of the monitor’s resolution.
  • A bi-directional spirit level that puts an end to skewed horizons.
  • Quick access to a new rear info screen to display top panel information on the rear display.
  • Live video view mode via Phocus when working with the camera connected to a computer.
  • Schneider and Rollei electronic shutters are supported by H4D-40, H4D-50 and H4D-60 for accurate work on technical cameras.

Hasselblad continued to state:

Providing this update to the listed members of the H4D family is part of Hasselblad’s commitment to ensure that its customers have access to leading edge technology without any additional investment. The free and user-installable firmware updates will be available beginning December 1, 2011.

Future Firmware Update to Bring 24p, 30p, 60p, 60i to the Sony NEX-FS100

In some quick news, Philip Bloom is reporting an interesting tidbit for Sony NEX-FS100 owners. According to Bloom:

I just spoke to one of the main Sony Europe chaps who confirmed to me that Sony will be offering the NTSC upgrade to the PAL versions of the FS100 for free, probably around the Winter time.

If this indeed comes to fruition, the free update would be a major upgrade to an already competent camera.

New Firmware Update for the Canon 60D

The latest firmware update has just been released for the Canon 60D. Update 1.1.0 is stated to correct:

1. Fixes a phenomenon where the wireless built-in flash settings are reset to defaults when the battery is removed from the camera.
2. Fixes an intermittent phenomenon where image-rotation information is not recognized correctly when shooting with the camera in the vertical position depending on the timing of the shutter release.

Canon 1D Mark IV Firmware Update 1.1.0

In some quick news, 1D Mark IV users can now download the newest firmware update from Canon. Version 1.1.0 is reported to “Improve writing/reading speeds when using UDMA 7-compatible CF cards” and “Fix a phenomenon where the ability to shoot movies may be stopped.”

Canon 5D Mark II Firmware Update 2.0.9

Canon released the newest firmware update for 5D Mark II users today aiming to correct some minor issues. Firmware 2.0.9 includes the following fixes.

1. Improves writing/reading speeds when using UDMA 7-compatible CF cards.
2. Fixes a phenomenon where the IS function will not work when custom function C.Fn III-2 is set to [5: IS start] and the lens attached does not have an AF stop button. This is because custom function C.Fn III-2 allows users to assign IS start to the AF stop button on the lens
3. Corrects misspellings in the menu screens displayed in Arabic, Portuguese, Spanish, and Thai languages.
