CES 2012: Canon Announces the PowerShot G1 X

NPD Study: More Than 25% of Photos and Video Now Taken by Smartphones

According to the NPD Group’s new Imaging Confluence market research study, smartphones are beginning to take their first large bite out of the overall U.S. camera market pie, gaining significant traction this past year with the report stating: “The percent of photos taken with a smartphone (Apple iPhone or any other smartphone) went from 17 last year to 27 this year while the share of photos taken on any camera dropped from 52 percent to 44 percent.”

Packing two 12mp 1/2.3-inch sensors held behind dual 25-100mm optical zoom lenses, the point-and-shoot can capture 2D and 3D images and 1080/60i HD video simultaneously by way of the lenses ability to focus and zoom independently of each other, even granting the ability to capture photos or video at different angles of view. What’s more, the 3D1 touts a 3.5-inch LCD touchscreen, ISO sensitivity range of 100-6400, and a continuous burst rate of 8fps in full-resolution. The Panasonic 3D1 will hit store shelves this December for $499.99.

Lytro Reveals the First Consumer Light Field Camera: Hands-on Video

Is it a flashlight? One of those handy-dandy laser pointers? The realization of the mind-eraser from Men in Black!? No, none of the above, but it is the new piece of camera technology poised to take the photographic world by storm.

Lytro, the Silicon Valley start-up pioneering light-field technology, finally unveiled the first camera to contain such abilities. The tiny, rectangular point-and-shoot boasts 8X zoom lens with a constant f/2 aperture, up to 16GB of internal memory, and an 11 mega-ray Lytro sensor, capturing eleven million rays of light. A mega-ray is the new measure of which a light-field camera captures the direction, color, and intensity of available light, and its in the manipulation of that light where the Lytro cameras main selling point lies.
