Just yesterday we reported news originating from Sony Alpha Rumors regarding the “high-performance standard zoom lens” shown in the Sony E-mount lens road-map shown above. While we knew minute details such as its focal length and the expected release time-frame, today’s news falls into that unexpectedly awesome category, as SAR has revealed another interesting tidbit about the 16-50mm F/3.5-5.6 OSS G zoom – it will be in the form of a pancake lens!
The news comes from what Sony Alpha Rumors is calling a “super trusted source” – going as far as to confirm the not only the lens’ focal length and aperture, but also its pancake form-factor, comparable to that of the Panasonic 14-42mm X pancake zoom shown below.
As mentioned before the Sony 16-50mm F/3.5-5.6 OSS G pancake is expected to be announced alongside the Sony NEX-F5 “this summer,” or as multiple reports paint it as, possibly June. Stay Tuned!

This is pretty exciting news… I love my 16mm pancake with ultra-wide adapter – but I’d probably leave it at home (along with all my other lenses) when travelling if I had one of these!
Indeed! It will be interesting to see exactly how small/thin it really is. I’d bet the 16mm will be a tad smaller.
Yes, that is good news, the 18-55 being unsatisfactory on many levels. If I were the king at Sony, I’d ask for à 16-85.
